Spider Pest Control Melbourne

Melbourne is home to more than 2000 varieties of spiders but only seven species are commonly
found around homes or buildings that like to hitch a ride inside.

These are the Redback Spider, White Tail Spider, Huntsman Spider, Black House Spider, Wolf Spider, Funnel web Spider, and Mouse Spider. Spiders only enter the home when they are in search of insects and if your home provides a feast of insects, you’ll find spiders! Generally, spiders are a natural part of the ecosystem and do us a favour by keeping the population of insects under control. This balance may get out of control if your home provides the right living conditions with plenty of places to crawl, hide, mate, lay eggs, and weave webs.

Some spiders can leave a nasty bite with reactions such as pain, nausea, sweating and in extreme cases, paralysis. If you have children at home, then you want to make sure the home is free of these crawling critters.

If you find many more spiders than you’re comfortable with, then one of our experienced and qualified pest control technicians will come to the rescue.

You can minimise spiders in the home by eliminating gaps under door and on windows, cutting back branches outside that are close to windows, removing cobwebs regularly, and dusting and vacuuming regularly. Spiders also like dark corner and private spaces, so it’s a good idea to get under the furniture and into nooks and crannies to clean these out too.

Did you know?

The only spiders that are dangerous to humans and have caused deaths are the Redback and Sydney funnel web spider. Sydney funnel webs are not found in Melbourne and the Melbourne funnel webs are not dangerous. An effective antivenom was developed for Redback spiders in 1956, and for funnel web spiders in 1980, and there have not been any recorded deaths in Australia from a spider bite since then.

Let our spider control team remove these creepy critters from your home or commercial property

These eight-legged critters move very fast to find a quiet place to weave webs, make a home, and lay eggs. They can reproduce quickly laying potentially thousands of eggs. They can hide inside clothes on the floor, behind cushions, curtains, and many places you like to relax. Best to get onto a spider problem before it becomes an infestation.

Spider pest control includes:

Identification of the spider infestation and recommend suitable treatment
Insecticide dust to roof void and subfloor area (if the house on slab wall cavities will be dusted)
Internal crack, crevice and harbourage areas
External spray to house walls, window frames, door frames, eave lines and alfresco
Internal skirting spray

A small investment for a large return – your peace of mind.

Signs of a spider infestation

Here are 3 typical signs of a spider infestation.

  • Presence of multiple webs – One of the most noticeable signs of a spider infestation is the presence of multiple spider webs around your home. These webs may vary in size, shape, and location, depending on the type of spider. Webs are found in ceiling corners, underneath furniture, near windows, behind doors and pot plants.
  • You see more spiders – If you’re frequently spotting spiders indoors, it may be a sign of an infestation. While it’s normal to see the occasional spider, regularly encountering spiders, especially of different species, suggests they are breeding inside the home.
  • Egg sacs – Spider egg sacs are small, white or cream-coloured sacs that contain hundreds of spider eggs. These sacs are often hidden in corners, behind furniture, and other undisturbed areas.

How to prevent spiders

Here are four effective ways to remove or prevent spiders from entering your home:

  1. Set up spider traps or spider catchers which are non-toxic sticky glue traps called “spider traps” can capture spiders in busy places.
  2. Remove the spider webs as soon as you see them is crucial. Spiders reproduce quickly, so where one appears, many will soon follow.
  3. Spray vinegar or peppermint oil in cervices where you see spiders because spiders taste and smell with their legs and these odours naturally turn them away.
  4. Keep your home clean and clutter-free to deter them from hiding in among the clutter seeking food and shelter.

Common Types of Spiders

White-tailed spider (Lampona cylindrata)
White-tailed spiders can easily be identified by the distinctive white spot on the end of their cylindrical abdomen. They hunt by night, and often found indoors near bedding or clothing. While their bites can be painful, they are not considered dangerous to humans.

Huntsman spider (Sparassidae)
Huntsman spiders are large and fast-moving spiders with long legs and a flat body. They like the shelter of homes and are usually inside out of the weather or seeking food. Despite their intimidating size, huntsman spiders are not aggressive and their bites are relatively harmless.

Redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti)
Redback spiders are small, with a shiny black body and a distinctive red stripe on the upper side of their rounded abdomen. They dwell in sheltered areas such as sheds, garages, and under outdoor furniture. Their bites can be dangerous, particularly to children and the elderly, but antivenom is available.

Black house spider (Badumna insignis)
Black house spiders are medium-sized, dark brown or black and you’ll find them around windows, doors, and in dark corners. They build funnel-shaped webs and are generally non-aggressive. Their bites can cause mild pain and swelling.

Brown house spider (Steatoda grossa)
Brown house spiders, also known as false widow spiders, are small, dark brown to black spiders that often set up webs in dark, undisturbed areas like basements, attics, and garages. Their bites can cause mild to moderate pain and swelling.

Garden Orb-Weaving Spider (Eriophora transmarina)
These large, robust spiders are known for their impressive, wheel-shaped webs that they build in gardens and around homes. They are most active at night and can vary in colour from brown to reddish-brown. Garden orb-weaving spiders are generally harmless and play a beneficial role in controlling insect populations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, some species such as Redbacks and White-Tailed Spiders can pose health risks. While many spiders are harmless, it’s best to have infestations assessed and treated professionally for peace of mind.

Our technicians use safe, targeted treatments to eliminate spiders and reduce the insects they feed on. This two-step approach controls current infestations and prevents new ones from forming.

Highly recommend Pest Police! Ben was absolutely exceptional, his level of knowledge and expertise was second to none and immediately put me at ease. From the very beginning, he showed genuine compassion and empathy for what has been an incredibly stressful situation, taking the time to truly listen to my concerns rather than rushing through the job.

What stood out most was how mindful and respectful he was about the safety of my pets. I had significant concerns about how the issue could be treated without putting them at risk, and Ben carefully talked me through every step of the process in clear, easy-to-understand terms. He explained how the treatment works, what precautions were needed, and tailored everything to ensure it was done in a way I felt completely comfortable with.

Ben was thorough, professional, and incredibly reassuring throughout the entire service. His attention to detail, calm manner, and genuine care made a huge difference during what could have been an overwhelming experience. It’s rare to come across someone who combines such high technical skill with such a strong level of empathy and customer care.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ben and Pest Police to anyone, especially pet owners. A well-deserved five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

The service was held in professional way. I wasn't though asked and I didn't give any permission for the pictures taken from my place and see those pictures at a later stage on the inspection report.
I do understand that the technician use these as a proof that he conducted the place and did the inspection finally but it should get my permission first.
