Silverfish Control Melbourne

A silverfish infestation can be difficult to notice as they are nocturnal creatures and move very quickly. These small, soft, wingless insects like to feed on dried meat, flour, starch, paper, gum, glue, cotton, linen, rayon, silk, sugar, and breakfast cereals. They seek out dark and damp environments such as dark cupboards and basements. These pests thrive in warmer temperatures and will make their way into heated indoor spaces during winter so that they can set up their colonies and once inside, they reproduce quickly.

Although they are not harmful to human beings as they don’t carry diseases, they will destroy your favourite items of clothing and books.

They can enter homes through cracks and crevices, often hitchhiking on the backs of items brought inside the home.

Did you know?

Silverfish are one of the most primitive insects, and have been crawling around the planet for over 100 millions years! When the female reaches adulthood, she lay eggs every day up to three times per day in crevices and cracks around your home. These eggs hatch within three weeks and grow into adult stage within four weeks.

Let our experienced technicians remove silverfish from your home

With environmentally friendly solutions that are both human and pet friendly, our qualified technicians will identify the extent of the silverfish infestation and recommend a suitable treatment plan. Using the latest techniques, we pride ourselves on doing the job right the first time, and we don’t stop until the silverfish nests and pests are removed!

Silverfish removal treatment includes:

Insecticide dust to roof void and subfloor area (if the house is on a slab wall cavities will be dusted)
External spray to house walls, window frames, eave line, garden beds up to 1m from house, fencing and clotheslines
Identifying internal crack, crevice, and harbourage areas
Internal skirting spray

A small investment for a large return – your peace of mind.

Signs of a silverfish infestation

Since silverfish are nocturnal, it can be challenging to spot them, but even one living silverfish is a good sign that you have an infestation happening somewhere in the house. Here are typical signs of a silverfish infestation.

  • Presence of Live Silverfish – The presence of live silverfish is the first indication of a silverfish infestation. The colour of these tiny, adaptable, and slippery insects ranges from blue-silver to brown-grey. They have a teardrop form and move by wiggling back and forth, much like a fish does when swimming.
  • Unusual Droppings – The faeces of silverfish are quite distinctive. They resemble tiny black peppercorns and are frequently located in areas where silverfish like to congregate, such as the underside of cabinets or the backs of furniture. Due to their small size, silverfish droppings are frequently mistaken for dust or other household debris. However, you will know that you have these uninvited guests if you sweep once and their droppings keep coming back.
  • Skin Moults – Throughout their entire lives, silverfish shed their skin. Despite being tiny, delicate, and translucent, the outer shells they shed are a reliable sign of a silverfish infestation.
  • Yellows Stains on Some of Your Stuff – Even if you don’t see the silverfish moulting their skin, you might observe the golden dust they leave behind on surfaces. These yellow stains frequently appear on clothing, books, papers, and cardboard boxes.

How to prevent a silverfish infestation

To avoid future silverfish infestations in your home, follow these tips:

  1. Maintain a Clean Home at All Times – Pests of all kinds can be avoided by keeping the house clean. Additionally, this gives you an opportunity to find moulting skin and other telltale symptoms of an insect infestation, such as droppings. In light of this, dust and vacuum your home at least once a week, or more often if you have pets or children.
  2. Store Your Dry and Pet Food in Airtight Containers – Put food in boxes, such as cereal, into airtight, sealed containers. Large rubber tubs with tight-fitting covers are ideal for storing larger bags. Immediately clean up any food spillage.
  3. Remove Accessible Food Sources – Always remember that silverfish consume both organic and inorganic things. Remove external food sources like brush piles, dead plants, wood piles, and leaf piles to deter them. Keep leaves, shrubs, and other moisture-rich material away from the exterior of your property. Secure all food sources inside (as mentioned above), and clear the inside of your home of clutter like stacks of paper and cardboard boxes.
  4. Eliminate Moisture in Your Home – Store your clothes in a cool, dry location to help reduce humidity in your home. If your house is frequently moist, keep them out of the basement and install a dehumidifier.
  5. Seal Cracks or Any Tiny Gaps – Caulk can be used to fill tiny gaps around windows and doors, blocking potential entry sites used by pests like silverfish to enter your home.
  6. Pay Attention to Proper Ventilation – Keep in mind that silverfish enjoy moisture. Concentrate on ventilation in warm, moist spaces like bathrooms to make your home as hostile as you can for them. To maintain a cool, dry environment, you can also utilise a vent fan or a dehumidifier.

Common Types of Silverfish

Common Silverfish (Lepisma saccharinum)
This is the most widespread species of silverfish in Melbourne and often referred to as bristletails or paper fish. They have a slender, silver-grey body and are typically found in damp, dark areas such as bathrooms, basements, and kitchens. They like to feed on paper, cardboard, and other starchy materials like books, glue, and fabrics.

Gray Silverfish (Ctenolepisma longicaudata)
Slightly larger and darker than the common silverfish, gray silverfish are often found in similar environments. They have a more robust body and can also be found in attics, roof spaces, and behind walls.

Highly recommend Pest Police! Ben was absolutely exceptional, his level of knowledge and expertise was second to none and immediately put me at ease. From the very beginning, he showed genuine compassion and empathy for what has been an incredibly stressful situation, taking the time to truly listen to my concerns rather than rushing through the job.

What stood out most was how mindful and respectful he was about the safety of my pets. I had significant concerns about how the issue could be treated without putting them at risk, and Ben carefully talked me through every step of the process in clear, easy-to-understand terms. He explained how the treatment works, what precautions were needed, and tailored everything to ensure it was done in a way I felt completely comfortable with.

Ben was thorough, professional, and incredibly reassuring throughout the entire service. His attention to detail, calm manner, and genuine care made a huge difference during what could have been an overwhelming experience. It’s rare to come across someone who combines such high technical skill with such a strong level of empathy and customer care.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ben and Pest Police to anyone, especially pet owners. A well-deserved five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
The service was held in professional way. I wasn't though asked and I didn't give any permission for the pictures taken from my place and see those pictures at a later stage on the inspection report.
I do understand that the technician use these as a proof that he conducted the place and did the inspection finally but it should get my permission first.
