A SENSE OF SMELL
A dog’s sense of smell is highly sensitive. In fact, it ranges from 10,000 to 100,000 times more superior than ours! This is because a dog’s scent organ is about four times larger than a human’s. Both indoors and outdoors. If you have termites, they will find them.

Termite-detection dogs have a recorded success rate of up to 97 percent accuracy. They have the ability to find the presence of live termites in all environments. They can detect termites where conventional detection techniques fail. Termite-detection dogs can detect live termites through carpets and under rugs; no other method can achieve this unless all floor coverings are removed.
GREAT DOG TRAINING
Termite-detection dogs are trained the same way as police and customs dogs except that they are taught to detect the scent of termites. These termite-detection dogs undergo months of intensive training with specialists before being put into service. This thorough training makes these animals the most-efficient and -effective termite detection tool available.
AUSTRALIAN QUARANTINE AND PEST INSPECTIONS SERVICE
Pest Police Australia and our Termite Detection Dogs have previously worked with AQIS for the detection of Termites and Wood Borer on vessels that arrive in Melbourne docks. Our dogs are highly recognised as a termite-detection tool and have recently undergone trials to ascertain their accuracy with high results.
EASILY FINDING TERMITES
Like other detection dogs, termite detection dogs walk through a property and pick up the scent of the item they are trained to find — in our case it is termites. The dogs hone in on the area of infestation and give the handler a positive signal that they have detected active termites in the building by sitting down at the point of termite activity.
THE HIDDEN TRUTH:
AQIS and industry are working together to trial timber pest-detection technologies. Detecting timber pests using traditional techniques, such as visual inspection, is problematic because timber can be infested but not show any visible signs, such as emergence holes or frass.
THE GOOD NEWS
The good news is that there have been several recent advances in timber pest-detection technologies that may enable inspections to be conducted with a greater degree of confidence. With this in mind, AQIS ran a pilot trial in Melbourne to gauge the effectiveness of a range of technologies and equipment for possible use in AQIS inspections to detect insects such as termites and beetle larvae present in imported timber and timber products including yachts.
AQIS has been using visual inspection, detector dogs and, occasionally, X-ray units to detect pests in imported wood products. Detector dogs and X-rays are not always available at inspection points, and maintenance and training needs contribute to significant ongoing costs.
With input from external State and Commonwealth government agencies such as CSIRO and the Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSW), as well as Pest Police Australia and Top Dog Pest Solutions, the trial tested more than 120 wood samples — both naturally infested and uninfested (control) samples. The results from the trial are now being analysed and recommendations will be made on the basis of their efficacy.

In the past few years, a new technology has emerged as a significant tool in the ever-lasting fight against termites. It’s known as a few names, usually “thermal imaging” or “infrared”, but both make reference to the same genre of devices. The technology itself has been around for many, many years, but only recently has the technology advanced to a stage where it’s affordable for businesses to employ it with a reasonable result.
WHAT IT CAN DO
As with all technologies, there’s a lot of myths floating around, so here’s a couple of short lists on what thermal imaging can and cannot do.

HOW EXACTLY DO THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS WORK?
Everything has a different heat pattern due to various environmental factors (sunlight, ambient temperature, humidity, etc.) and what the object is made of (density, moisture content, etc.). Because the nature of all things is to reach an equilibrium (where temperatures are all the same), heat is moved from one object to another to try and get to this equilibrium.
SEEING TERMITES' EQUILIBRIUM
Termites enjoy temperatures from 28 – 36ºC, and make their nests and leads sit at around this temperature. As ambient temperatures are usually much lower than this, the imprint this has on walls and other building materials can be seen. Having a Thermal Imaging Camera is like having tens of thousands of highly tuned, non-contact thermometers, producing an-easy-to-understand and -interpret picture.
Nearly all pests, termites and other common wood-destroying organisms need moisture and high humidity to survive and multiply, thus they will seek the locations of high moisture and humidity to inhabit. Such areas can contribute to infestation by termites, carpenter ants and other fungal growth. Thus the location of areas of excess moisture is one of the most important elements in the location, control and eradication of wood destroying organisms.
OUR MOISTURE METER TOOL
At Pest Police Australia, we only use the best equipment available, including the Tramex Moisture Encounter Plus MEP. The Moisture Encounter PLUS MEP is an upgraded version of the world’s most popular and successful non-destructive moisture meter the Moisture Encounter. With no probes or pins to cause surface damage, the MEP uses external rubber electrodes in direct contact with the surface for best sensitivity and signal penetration.
With non-destructive measurement, there is no surface damage to the material being tested. Three measurement ranges are optimised for testing different materials. It has deep signal penetration up to 1¼ inches (30mm) to detect elevated moisture through most covering materials without having to damage the material being tested.
External rubber electrodes make direct contact with the material for best sensitivity, repeatability and greater depth of signal penetration. Wide range of readings of five percent to 30 percent on the wood scale and 0 to 100 on the comparative scale for other materials.
It is also has a large, clear and easy-to-read metre. Hold function allows the user to “freeze” the reading taken in awkward locations. There is an audio warning tone for high-moisture readings. It can be switched on or off. The auto power-down switches the meter off when not in use, letting it preserve battery power.
Wood samples from the trial were also used for a second cold-treatment trial in Melbourne to measure the efficacy of cold treatment for killing pests in timber. There has been a world-wide push for alternatives to methyl bromide and other traditional treatments of infested wooden products owing to harmful environmental impacts.
THE RESULTS OF IT
The infested wood samples were kept in a freezer at the Melbourne office for varying lengths of time (1 to 14 days). Treated samples were removed from the freezer, defrosted, and then destructively sampled. All insects recovered were counted, measured, identified and their condition noted (alive or dead). At least 100 insects were recovered, all of which were dead, which indicates that the treatment was successful.

The outcome of the trials will be reported on soon and may be used to provide AQIS with additional options for treating a range of timber products effectively, maintaining quarantine integrity while being friendly to the environment.
