Regular termite inspections are important for every property, but they become even more important when there are conditions around a building that could increase the risk of termite activity, such as moisture.

Pest Police was recently called to carry out a scheduled termite inspection at a council community hub in Frankston. As a busy public building used by the local community, keeping on top of preventative pest management is an important part of protecting both the property and the people who use it.

When our inspector arrived, there had been heavy rainfall and the building had significant water leaks, with buckets positioned throughout areas of the property to catch the water. Although this was a regular termite inspection, the moisture problem became the focus of our assessment.

The facilities manager had arranged to fix the water leaks in the ceiling, but we also knew there was another potential problem – water attracts quiet termites who seek out moisture under buildings.

Termites are naturally attracted to environments where moisture is readily available. Water leaks, poor drainage, damp subfloors and moisture-damaged timber can all create conditions that make a property more conducive to termite attack.

We inspected the building thoroughly, and thankfully we didn’t find any active termites during the inspection.

The inspection gave the council an opportunity to address the water issues before they potentially contributed to a termite problem. While no termites were detected, our inspection identified significant water damage and moisture issues requiring attention. We made recommendations to the council to address these conditions and reduce the property’s future risk of termite infestation.

Regular termite inspections are the most effective insurance against termites

This is a great example of why a professional termite inspection isn’t simply about finding termites.

Our inspectors are fully licenced and accredited, and will do a thorough inspection, looking for the conditions around a property that could make it more vulnerable in the future. Finding those risks early gives property owners and managers an opportunity to rectify them before termites move in.

For a large community building, prevention can also mean avoiding expensive repairs, disruption to services and potentially significant structural damage.

If your home, business or community facility is due for its annual termite inspection, don’t wait until you see the signs. Early detection and prevention are always better than dealing with termite damage later.
